AEK Larnaca 0-2 West Ham: Michail Antonio nets twice in welcome win for David Moyes in Europa Conference League clash in Cyprus after heavy loss at Brighton piled pressure on Hammers boss

West Ham beat AEK Larnaca 2-0 in Thursday's Europa Conference League clash
Michail Antonio bagged both goals in a welcome return to form the for Hammers
It came after back-to-back heavy losses against Brighton and Manchester United

By Kieran Gill

If only the Premier League came as easy to West Ham as the Europa Conference League.

By beating Larnaca, David Moyes' men made it nine wins from nine in the competition this season and they will target a perfect 10 in next week's last-16 second leg.

Michail Antonio's two goals were enough to defeat the Cypriot First Division side located along the coast from Ayia Napa. A few West Ham fans may leave that party town with headaches, but not the players, nor the manager, after this controlled performance.

Moyes selected a strong line-up, resisting the urge to rest Declan Rice. The captain was among several regular first-teamers who started as West Ham target qualification for the quarter finals.

The Premier League remains Moyes' priority - his 'bread and butter' as he likes to call it - and Aston Villa are the next visitors to the London Stadium on Sunday.

It does no harm to warm up with a win, albeit Villa will provide a much sterner test than the one West Ham faced in this idyllic Cypriot city.

Larnaca is not the biggest stadium - 77 of the 92 Football League clubs have a bigger ground - but the 8,000-seater ΑΕΚ Arena was sold out for the visit of Premier League opposition. The 1,600 from West Ham expected a win and Antonio delivered it.

West Ham made it nine Europa Conference League wins from nine games on Thursday

Larnaca grew in confidence amid a flurry of early corners, with one header from Rafael Lopes going narrowly over the crossbar after he nipped in front of Antonio.

Said Benrahma looked like West Ham's liveliest player and after half an hour, he wriggled his way through Larnaca's box, beating three men before testing Kenan Piric from a tight angle.

In the 36th minute, West Ham found their breakthrough. Benrahma crossed and Antonio, unmarked after drifting in between Larnaca's defenders, headed beyond Piric for 1-0.

In first-half stoppage time, Rice played a pass into Antonio. With time to shoot from 25 yards, he curled the ball around Nenad Tomovic and into the top right corner for 2-0.

Antonio thought he had secured his hat-trick after the start of the second half, but the post denied him the match ball. Moyes made changes after an hour, replacing Antonio, Benrahma and Rice with Gianluca Scamacca, Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek.

Maxwel Cornet also came on for his first appearance since October – a welcome sight for West Ham. Cornet's terrific through-ball left Lucas Paqueta one on one with Piric, but the Brazilian disappointingly could not find a finish.

The third goal eluded Moyes' men but nonetheless, they remain nine for nine in the Europa Conference League.

Jose Mourinho's Roma won this competition last season. Moyes believes West Ham can win it this year and certainly it is providing a feel-good factor away from their Premier League woes.

Lucas Paqueta, Michail Antonio, Lukasz Fabianski - West Ham injuries ahead of Aston Villa clash

A full look at West Ham United's current list of injuries after Thursday night's win over AEK Larnaca and ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against Aston Villa

By Jonty Colman West Ham United FC writer

West Ham United will be looking to pick up two victories in less than 72 hours when they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers play host to Villa at the London Stadium on Sunday and go into the game off the back of a 2-0 win over AEK Larnaca on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa Conference League round of 16 tie at the AEK Arena.

Ahead of the meeting with Villa, here is a look at West Ham’s current list of injury concerns.

Vladimir Coufal (heel)

Right-back Vladimir Coufal has missed the last three matches due to a heel injury, which forced him off during last month’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Coufal had been nursing the issue going into the win over the Tricky Trees, but the severity of it forced him off at half-time and has since seen him miss trips to Manchester United, Brighton and Hove Albion and AEK Larnaca.

Speaking ahead of flying out to Cyprus, Moyes said that Coufal would miss out after suffering with plantar fascia.

“He’s not with us because he’s got plantar fascia in his heel,” Moyes told football.london . “Look, time will help it but he’s not available for the game, no.”

Lukasz Fabianski (cheek/eye)

Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is set to return to action next month after fracturing his cheekbone and eye-socket against Forest.

Fabianski was forced off midway through the second half after being caught by the knee of Forest defender Felipe after the Polish stopper innocuously went for the ball.

Speaking on it ahead of facing Brighton, Moyes confirmed that the goalkeeper has had an eye operation which will keep him out of action until after this month’s international break.

“My belief is he had an operation this week,” said Moyes. “He had a plate inserted in his eye I believe. I think he had it on Thursday. We think it would be after the international break before he would be available again.”

Fabianski was however pictured by West Ham’s club website back in training on Wednesday ahead of the squad flying to Cyprus for their first league win over Larnaca. However, he was not part of the travelling squad.

Michail Antonio (calf)

Striker Michail Antonio missed the heavy defeat at Brighton following a hamstring issue sustained during the FA Cup loss to United, but was back in the squad in Cyprus.

The 32-year-old scored both goals in his first brace since August 2021 but came off on the hour mark with concerns over a calf issue.

“He’s just come off with a calf there,” said Moyes after the win over Larnaca. “I was taking him off anyway, but he felt his calf so we’ll need to check it out."

Flynn Downes (ankle)

Midfielder Flynn Downes played the duration of the win over Larnaca but found himself booked in the second half, meaning he will miss next week’s second leg due to suspension.

The 24-year-old suffered an ankle injury in the second half, with Downes telling the media post-match that it felt a bit swollen.

Moyes said on the injury that Downes could have to have a couple of stitches in his ankle following the issue picked up in the game.

“He opened his ankle up a bit, he’s probably going to get a couple of stitches on his ankle, the bit when he went down,” Moyes told football.london .

“I could’ve taken him off, I was a bit worried when he got the booking so I thought I could make that change but they told me he was already suspended for next week so I thought I’d take my chances and hope he sees it out.”

Lucas Paqueta (calf)

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta only featured for the final portion of the game in Cyprus and should have scored, only to put a late chance straight at Larnaca goalkeeper Kenan Piric.

However, speaking after the match, Moyes said that Paqueta had been struggling with a calf issue.

“Paqueta also felt his calf when he went through on goal but hopefully he’ll be okay,” Moyes told

West Ham: £52k-a-week star now facing 'months out' at London Stadium

A West Ham United star may be forced to undergo surgery if his recovery does not go to plan, it has been claimed.

West Ham United star Vladimir Coufal could be on the sidelines for 'months' and undergo surgery after sustaining a heel problem, injury expert Ben Dinnery has told GIVEMESPORT.

Hammers boss David Moyes will be unable to call upon the right-back in a crucial period of the season as he has headed onto the treatment table.
West Ham injury news - Vladimir Coufal

Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of West Ham's Europa Conference League trip to AEK Larnaca, Moyes revealed Coufal has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in his heel.

It resulted in the £52,000-per-week star being unable to board the Hammers' flight to Cyprus, although Moyes stopped short of putting a timescale on how long it will be before he is back in contention.

Coufal's time on the sidelines will come as a major blow to West Ham as he has been a key man since completing a move worth £5million, according to Sky Sports, from Slavia Prague.

Injury news journalist Dinnery recently told GIVEMESPORT that he feared the full-back had suffered a serious problem when he was forced off midway through the east Londoners' 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest last month.

Moyes conceded that Coufal had been playing through the pain barrier and his heel issue was worse than first feared.

What has Ben Dinnery said about Coufal?

Dinnery believes there is a possibility that Coufal could be a long-term absentee after his heel problem was confirmed as plantar fasciitis.

The injury expert has warned that the West Ham man could be forced to go under the knife if he does not respond well to conservative treatment.

Dinnery told GIVEMESPORT: "With plantar fasciitis, it is really difficult to put any kind of definitive timeline on it. Potentially, he could be looking at anything from weeks to months.

"It's a loading issue, so you have to ease back and have conservative treatment in the first instance. If he doesn't respond, although most do and I think over 80 per cent would respond favourably, he would even have to go down the surgery route."

Does Coufal's injury come as a major blow to West Ham?

Despite West Ham's Premier League struggles this season, Sofascore statistics show that Coufal has still been averaging 2.0 tackles, 1.8 clearances and 1.4 interceptions per outing.

The 30-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions since the campaign got underway and was handed nine consecutive starts in the top flight prior to being forced off against Nottingham Forest.

There is no doubt that Coufal was missed during West Ham's 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend as Ben Johnson, who slotted into his right-back berth, lost possession 13 times despite only having 60 touches of the ball.

WhoScored have handed the Czech a 6.53 average match rating for his Premier League performances this term, which may not be as high as he would like, but his work rate and commitment cannot be faulted.

Coufal, who has racked up 12 assists in 96 West Ham outings, will be sorely missed by Moyes in the bid for Premier League survival.
